The Ultimate Among Us Experience: Off-Screen, On-Table
Are you ready to bring the suspense and thrill of Among Us into the real world? We all know the feeling of rushing through the Skeld map to complete tasks before the Impostor strikes. But what if you could hold that entire experience in your hands? Today, I’m sharing my most ambitious project yet: a massive, 23-page DIY Skeld Map Gamebook. This isn’t just a simple craft—it’s a fully functional, hand-operated game simulator. From the MedBay scan to the legendary card swipe, every task is a miniature mechanical marvel designed for hours of interactive play.
The Essential Creator’s Toolkit Because this project involves 23 pages and complex moving parts, preparation is everything. This is an engineering project as much as it is a paper craft:
- The Foundation: 23 sheets of 160g A4 White Paper. (The heavier weight is essential. Standard paper will buckle under the pressure of the sliding mechanisms; 160g provides the “snap” and durability needed for a gamebook).
- Structural Support: 4 white and 2 black 160g A4 sheets for reinforcement layers.
- Mechanical Components:
- 2 Brads (Split Pins): For the color-changing wheel.
- Black Straws/Plastic Tubes & Wooden Sticks: These are your secret weapons for creating smooth, guided sliding tracks for your crewmates.
- Transparent PVC: Essential for the MedBay scanner and the Card Swipe slot to give them that “authentic screen” look.
- Adhesives: Clear tape (for reinforcement), double-sided tape, and a high-quality glue stick.
💡 Pro Crafting Tip: When creating the “sliding tracks” for your characters using straws and sticks, add a tiny bit of paraffin wax or pencil lead (graphite) to the wooden stick. This acts as a lubricant, making your characters glide across the page effortlessly—like magic!
Game Scenes: A Tour of the Skeld
1. Customization Lobby (The First Scene) Every game starts in the lobby. I’ve designed a fully functional color wheel secured with brads. Spin it to choose your character’s color, and then select your favorite skins and hats from the side panels. It’s the perfect way to get into the “gaming mode” before starting your tasks.
2. Immersive Task System (Scenes 4-8) This is where the engineering comes in. Every task is designed to be tactile:
- MedBay Scan: Use the Transparent PVC slider to mimic the green scanning beam. Seeing that green light “move” across the progress bar is incredibly satisfying.
- Reactor Instructions: Test your memory with the light-sequence panel—tap the lights in the correct order to win!
- Electrical Wiring: Match the colors and “connect” the wires in the storage room. It’s a puzzle that requires focus and patience.
- Admin Card Swipe: Test your speed and precision with the sliding card mechanism. If you go too fast or too slow, you “fail” the task!
- O2 Trash Vent: Complete the trash disposal task… but don’t forget to check your back! The suspense is built into the design.
3. The Murder Mystery (The Climax) The game changes when a body is reported. We’ve included a dramatic “Reported Body” close-up scene. Move the voting screen to cast your ballot. Will you vote out the Impostor, or will you cast out an innocent Crewmate? The final flip of the page reveals the truth!
Why This Project is a Masterpiece
- High Interaction: Unlike a standard quiet book, every single page features a sliding, spinning, or pulling mechanic.
- Story-Driven Logic: It follows the exact pacing of an Among Us match, making it a perfect tool for roleplay.
- Tactile Satisfaction: There is something deeply soothing about the mechanical “click” of a straw-and-stick slider. It’s a craft that rewards you with a fun game you can actually play.
